How to Book Your Sailing Experience with Cavo Yachting

Bareboat vs. Skippered vs. Crewed Charter

A bareboat charter is perfect for experienced sailors who wish to navigate and manage the yacht independently, offering complete freedom and control. For those who prefer a more relaxed approach or lack sailing experience, a skippered charter includes a professional skipper who handles navigation and safety, allowing you to enjoy the journey stress-free. A crewed charter takes this a step further, providing both a skipper and a hostess to ensure a luxurious experience, with the skipper managing the yacht and the hostess taking care of meals, cleaning, and guest needs. Each option offers a unique way to enjoy your sailing adventure, tailored to your preferences and expertise.

What is the difference between a monohull sailing yacht and a catamaran?

A monohull sailing yacht is a traditional single-hulled vessel, known for its sleek design and classic sailing experience. It offers an authentic feel on the water, with a deeper keel that provides stability and better performance when sailing upwind. Monohulls are typically more compact, which can make them ideal for smaller groups or those looking for a more hands-on sailing experience.

In contrast, a catamaran has two parallel hulls, offering greater stability and a spacious layout. Its design minimizes rocking, making it more comfortable for those prone to seasickness. Catamarans also provide larger living areas, including expansive deck space and additional cabins, making them a popular choice for families or groups seeking comfort and relaxation. The shallow draft allows for anchoring closer to shore, perfect for exploring secluded bays.

Both options cater to different preferences, with monohulls emphasizing tradition and performance, while catamarans focus on stability and comfort.

Payment Policy

To confirm your booking, a 25% deposit of the charter price is required to secure the reservation. A further 25% of the charter price is due 120 days before the charter date. The remaining 50%, along with any applicable crew remuneration and additional extras, must be paid 60 days before the charter date.

All payments must be made via bank transfer, as we do not support credit card payments. This ensures a secure and reliable process for finalizing your booking.

Cancellation Policy

Our cancellation policy aligns with the payment schedule:

More than 120 days before the charter date: If you cancel before the second payment (25% of the charter price), you will forfeit the initial 25% deposit.
120–60 days before the charter date: Cancellations made after the second payment but before the final payment will result in the forfeiture of 50% of the total charter price.
Less than 60 days before the charter date: Cancellations within this period will result in the forfeiture of the full charter price, including crew remuneration and extras (if applicable).

In any event of cancellation, we guarantee that if the yacht is re-let under the same conditions (e.g., charter period, price, etc.), any payments received will be credited toward a future charter booking. The credit can be used for charters embarking no later than October 30th of the following year.

We recommend securing travel insurance to safeguard against unforeseen changes to your plans.

Check-In Day

Check-in begins at 17:00, as we do not offer early check-in. This policy ensures that we have enough time to thoroughly clean and prepare your yacht, ensuring it meets the highest standards of cleanliness and readiness for your journey.

If you arrive early, we recommend visiting MARABOO Beach Club in Nidri, a beautiful beachfront location with an excellent restaurant for a relaxing seaside lunch. Our team is happy to assist with reservations and taxi transfer arrangements to make your wait as enjoyable as possible.

Early Arrival and Luggage Storage

If you arrive early in Sivota, you are welcome to leave your luggage in the designated area in front of our office. This space is clearly marked as the "Luggage Area" and is shaded by an outdoor tent to protect your belongings from the sun.

Please note that this area is outdoors and not supervised, so we advise keeping any valuables with you. Due to space limitations, we are unable to store luggage inside the office.

We appreciate your understanding and hope this helps make your early arrival more convenient!

Administrative formalities and payments at base before embarkation

To ensure a smooth check-in process, we strongly encourage you to review your booking confirmation before arrival and prepare any required payments. This includes having the necessary cash payments (e.g., end-cleaning fees, APA, etc.) as well as a credit card ready for the refundable security deposit.

Please confirm with your credit card provider beforehand that they will allow a pre-authorization of the security deposit amount. We also recommend notifying your bank in advance that this transaction will take place in Greece on your check-in date with a yachting company. This precaution will help avoid any unexpected issues or delays that could affect your boarding process.

Taking these steps ensures a seamless start to your sailing adventure!

Check-Out Day

On check-out day, the yacht must return to our base in Sivota Bay, Lefkada Island, by Friday at 17:00. Upon arrival, we will assist with the refueling process. Guests are welcome to enjoy a free overnight stay onboard until Saturday at 9:00 am.

Please note that we cannot accommodate late check-outs, as our yachts are typically booked back-to-back. The time between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm is critical for our cleaning and technical teams to prepare the yachts for the next charter. Therefore, all guests must vacate the yachts by 9:00 am to allow our teams to begin their work promptly.

If you need to disembark earlier, please inform our staff in advance. We will assist with the disembarkation process and help arrange taxis or other transportation as needed. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring a smooth transition for all guests!

Are the Photos on Your Website of the Actual Yacht?

Yes, the photos on our website are of the actual yachts, and they reflect the exact condition in which the yacht will be handed over to you on check-in day. Additionally, walk-through videos are available for each yacht to give you a clearer understanding of its layout. Please note that for brand-new yachts (built in 2025), the photos shown are from the shipyard, as these yachts have not yet left the yard.

Are There Age Restrictions for Children or Seniors?

No, there are no age restrictions for children or seniors, and guests of all ages typically have a fantastic family experience onboard.

Children must be supervised at all times and are required to wear a lifejacket while at sea. We can provide children’s lifejackets—please inform our staff before your arrival of your child’s age and weight to ensure the appropriate size is available onboard.

Seniors are also warmly welcomed. Our gangways are wide and stable, making boarding easy and secure. However, please note that no disability facilities are available onboard. If you have any specific concerns or needs, feel free to contact us in advance.

Are pets allowed onboard?

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed onboard our yachts. Thank you for your understanding.

How to Reach Our Base at Sivota Bay on Lefkada Island?

Getting to our base in Sivota Bay on Lefkada Island is easy, with several convenient travel options available.

Via Aktio International Airport (Preveza - PVK)

Aktio International Airport, located approximately 60 km from Sivota Bay, offers direct flights from major European hubs such as London, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris, and Vienna. From the airport, private transfers are available:

Taxi (up to 4 passengers): €85
Mini Van (up to 8 passengers): €130
Minibus (up to 12 passengers): €160

Via Athens International Airport (ATH)

If you’re flying into Athens, you can reach our base via a private transfer. The scenic 4.5-hour drive offers the opportunity to stop for lunch at a charming seaside town along the way. Transfer options include:

Mini Van (up to 8 passengers): €650
Minibus (up to 12 passengers): €850

Via Corfu or Kefalonia

For those traveling from nearby islands, ferries to Lefkada are available. Once on Lefkada, you can arrange a private transfer to Sivota Bay for a smooth journey.

From Lefkas Town

For guests staying in Lefkas Town, transfers to the base are also available:

From Igoumenitsa

If arriving from the port of Igoumenitsa, which connects to Italy, private transfers are available:

Whether arriving by air or sea, our team is happy to assist with arranging your transfer to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey to Sivota Bay. However, please note that in order to ensure a smooth and stress-free departure, we kindly ask that you inform us of your taxi requirements in advance. Arranging taxis last minute, especially during the high season, can be very challenging due to limited availability on the island, where demand often exceeds supply. Providing advance notice helps us secure your transfer and avoid any delays or inconveniences.

Provisioning Made Simple

For a stress-free start to your sailing adventure, we’ve streamlined the provisioning process. While there are several local supermarkets in Sivota village, stock can be limited. To ensure you have everything you need, we will send you a provisioning list a few weeks before your charter start date.

Simply fill out the list and place your order. Your provisions will be delivered directly to your yacht and stored away by our team before your arrival, allowing you to set sail with everything ready and waiting for you.

Please note:

Payment for provisions must be made in cash before embarkation. A receipt will be provided.
The delivery service is complimentary.

For crewed charters, provisioning is managed by the hostess. Please refer to the "CREWED CHARTERS" section for more details.

What to Bring on Your Sailing Adventure

Packing for a yacht holiday is all about simplicity and practicality. Depending on your holiday plans—whether you’re relaxing aboard or exploring ashore—bring only the essentials for clothing, shoes, and extras. Here are some key tips to help you prepare:

Clothing: Light, breezy beachwear is perfect for daytime on deck, while casual evening attire like slacks or a sundress is ideal for outings ashore. For cooler evenings or breezy conditions, pack a windbreaker or light jacket.
Footwear: Please note that shoes are not allowed on board, so bring easy on/off slippers for convenience when stepping on and off the yacht.
Sun Protection: Sunscreen is vital, as are wide-brimmed hats, sailing caps, and loose-fitting cotton cover-ups. Avoid spray tanning lotions and self-tanners on deck, as they can stain the yacht’s upholstery.
Charging Devices: Our yachts are equipped with 12V USB ports in the cabins and 220V electric sockets, depending on availability. Ensure you bring a cable for charging your devices. You may also connect to the yacht’s soundsystem via BLUETOOTH. Chargers must be compatible with European 2-pin sockets.
Packing Style: Use soft-shell baggage for easy storage onboard, as space is limited. Hard-shell luggage can be cumbersome to store and move around.

Climate & Weather Conditions

The Ionian Sea, home to our base, is renowned for its calm and predictable sailing conditions, offering a stark contrast to the rougher Aegean Sea, where stronger winds and choppier waters are common. Summers in the Ionian are warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), making it a perfect setting for a relaxed sailing holiday.

Mornings and nights in the Ionian are usually very tranquil, ideal for anchoring in picturesque bays and enjoying swims in crystal-clear turquoise waters. As the day progresses, a gentle thermal wind typically picks up in the afternoon, providing excellent sailing conditions for traveling to your next island destination. This allows you to enjoy serene mornings and active sailing most afternoons, making the Ionian Sea a sailor’s paradise.

The combination of calm waters, mild winds, and stunning landscapes makes the Ionian Sea a top choice for both novice and experienced sailors.

What is a Bareboat Charter?

A bareboat charter allows you to rent a yacht without a skipper or crew, giving you full control to navigate and manage the vessel yourself. It’s an ideal option for experienced sailors seeking freedom and independence on their journey.

At Cavo Yachting, our catamarans up to 45ft are available for bareboat charters, offering the perfect balance of comfort and maneuverability for your sailing adventure.

What License is Required for a Bareboat Charter?

To charter a bareboat in Greece, the Greek Authorities require at least one valid sailing license or certification and an experienced crew member to act as co-skipper. Commonly accepted certifications include ASA and RYA qualifications, though Day Skipper certificates or licenses with nautical mile restrictions may sometimes be rejected by Port Authorities.

To avoid any issues, we recommend contacting us to evaluate your license in advance and confirm its validity for a bareboat charter.

Please note:

You must have your original sailing license with you at the charter base for checks by the Port Authorities.
A copy of your license is also required for Cavo Yachting records and as a backup in case the original is misplaced during your trip.

Ensuring your documentation is in order will make your check-in process seamless and your sailing adventure worry-free!

How Are the Yachts Equipped?

At Cavo Yachting, all our yachts are fully equipped to ensure safety, comfort, and excellent performance. Depending on the model, they feature either a full batten mainsail and self-tacking jib or a full rig, making them efficient and enjoyable to sail. Every yacht is outfitted with comprehensive safety and navigation equipment, mooring lines, and a long floating line for Mediterranean-style mooring.

Advanced systems like generators, inverters, air conditioning, and watermakers/desalinators are also standard on our yachts, providing convenience and a worry-free luxury vacation.

However, due to the sophisticated nature of these systems, we do not recommend chartering our yachts if you have limited sailing experience, as managing these features may be overwhelming for those unfamiliar with them. If you’re unsure, our team can help assess whether a skipper or crewed charter might better suit your needs.

Do the Yachts Have a Dinghy and Outboard Engine?

Yes, all our yachts come equipped with a dinghy and an outboard engine, and they are provided complimentary as part of your charter. This ensures you have easy access to explore bays, reach the shore, or enjoy small excursions during your sailing adventure.

Why Can’t I Charter a Larger Yacht than a 45ft Catamaran Bareboat?

At Cavo Yachting, we prioritize both safety and your enjoyment. While the trend in recent years has been toward chartering increasingly larger yachts with more guests, we believe this approach can compromise safety and the overall experience.

Larger catamarans, particularly those over 45ft, often feature a flybridge with blind angles that reduce visibility. Additionally, as the yacht's size increases, so does its momentum, making it more challenging to maneuver. Even highly experienced skippers who work professionally at sea year-round need time to adjust to a new yacht's handling, visibility, and unique characteristics. Attempting to adapt to a large yacht within a one-week charter can be stressful, especially during docking, which may detract from your vacation experience.

Of course, we know there are many skilled bareboat captains with years of experience, but we’ve found that operating larger yachts safely requires dedicated attention. That’s why our yachts above 45ft are entrusted to professional full-time captains who cannot step away from their responsibilities during the season.

This policy is not about a lack of trust—it’s about ensuring you have a safe, enjoyable, and stress-free sailing experience. For those seeking a larger yacht, a skipper-led charter is the perfect way to enjoy these impressive vessels with complete peace of mind.

Galley Equipment & Coffee Machine

At Cavo Yachting, we ensure that the galleys on all our yachts are comprehensively equipped to meet your culinary needs. Each yacht features a microwave for convenience, along with all essential cooking utensils and appliances.

We understand how important coffee is to many of our guests, so every yacht is equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine, compatible with Nespresso coffee capsules. Additionally, you’ll find a French Press and an Italian Moka Potonboard, giving you a variety of options to enjoy your coffee just the way you like it.

Our goal is to provide everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable onboard dining experience!

What Other Equipment is Included?

At Cavo Yachting, we aim to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience, so we include a range of equipment and amenities at no extra charge:

Bedlinen: Beds are fully made and ready for your arrival.
Towels: Each guest receives 4 towels—1 beach towel, 1 large bath towel, 1 medium-sized towel, and 1 hand towel.
WiFi: Complimentary WiFi is available onboard.
Recreational Equipment: Each bareboat yacht is equipped with two Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) and 5 snorkeling sets for your enjoyment.

Please note that while these services are provided complimentary, certain factors are beyond our control. If WiFi is unavailable due to provider issues (Vodafone) or there are problems with the free equipment, no compensation can be provided. However, we will always do our best to address any concerns or assist as much as possible!

Check-In Procedure

Upon your arrival, a member of our technical team will conduct a thorough technical check-in with you, carefully explaining all the yacht’s systems and ensuring you are familiar with its operation. After this detailed walkthrough, you will have additional time to inspect the yacht independently. If you notice anything you’d like to document or address, you can note it down during this time. This process ensures that you are fully comfortable with the yacht and confident as you embark on your sailing adventure.

Itinerary Tips and Weather Resources

Our team is always happy to provide tips and suggestions for your sailing itinerary. Feel free to ask us during the check-in process—we’ll gladly share local insights to help you make the most of your adventure.

For accurate weather forecasts and planning your route, we recommend using the PREDICT WIND app, which offers reliable wind and weather updates to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.

End-Cleaning Fee

The End-Cleaning Fee for our yachts is €450, and it must be paid before embarkation. This fee ensures the yacht is thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the next charter.

Payment must be made in cash, and you will receive a receipt for your payment. Please note that credit card payments are not accepted for this fee. To avoid any delays during your check-in process, we kindly ask you to ensure you have the funds readily available upon arrival.

What is a Security Deposit Waiver Fee?

The Security Deposit Waiver Fee is a mandatory fee of €500 per charter, designed to reduce your financial liability in the event of damage. This amount must be paid via bank transfer, together with your final payment before the charter begins.

While the Security Deposit Waiver does not eliminate the refundable security deposit, it reduces it from €5,000 to €1,500. This fee is used to purchase an insurance policy to cover part of the deductible amount, ensuring that your liability is limited to a much smaller portion.

This mandatory fee provides added security and peace of mind, allowing you to focus on enjoying your sailing experience.

Why Do I Still Need to Provide a Refundable Security Deposit After Paying the Security Deposit Waiver Fee?

The Security Deposit Waiver Fee reduces, but does not eliminate, the refundable security deposit. While the waiver covers part of the deductible, the remaining €1,500 refundable security deposit is required as a guarantee for any additional damage, loss, or unforeseen incidents not covered by the waiver.

The refundable security deposit must be provided via credit card (VISA or MASTERCARD). Unfortunately, we cannot accept American Express. Please ensure the following:

Confirm with your credit card provider that they will allow a pre-authorization of the security deposit amount.
Notify your bank in advance that this transaction will take place in Greece on your check-in date with a yachting company.

Taking these steps will help you avoid any unnecessary issues or delays during your boarding process and ensure a seamless start to your sailing adventure!

Assistance During Your Charter

Our technical team is available 24/7 to assist you throughout your charter. You can reach us anytime via WhatsApp or phone call for guidance or support.

In case of an emergency, we have a chase boat ready to provide on-site assistance, ensuring your safety and peace of mind during your sailing adventure. Your comfort and security are our top priorities!

Returning to Base

You must return to our base in Sivota Bay by Friday at 5pm at the latest. To ensure a smooth arrival, please inform our technical team about 30 minutes before your arrival via WhatsApp message or call.

As you approach Sivota Bay, tune into VHF Channel 88, where our team will guide you to your designated spot on the dock. This is likely the same spot from which you departed at the start of your charter. They will also provide instructions for preparing your yacht, such as where to place the fenders.

Our team will assist you with docking, offer clear guidance, and pass you the lazy line. Stay calm, follow the instructions carefully, and we’ll ensure a safe and stress-free docking experience.

Refueling

There’s no need to refuel the yacht before returning to base. A fuel truck will come directly to our dock to refuel your yacht. Upon arrival, please remain onboard until the truck arrives and the driver comes to your yacht.

The driver will escort you to the truck, where you can verify that the fuel meter is set to zero before refueling begins. After refueling, you can pay the driver directly via credit card or cash. Please note that cash payments over €500 are not permitted in Greece.

Fuel prices are based on current diesel market rates, which typically range between €1.50 and €1.80 per liter. This convenient process ensures a seamless end to your charter without the hassle of visiting a fuel station.

Diver Inspection and Damage Transparency

Upon your return, a professional diver will inspect the yacht from underneath to ensure there are no damages and that the vessel is in safe condition for the next guests. Therefore, there’s no need to hide any damage from us—please be fair and inform us if anything occurred during your charter.

By being upfront, our team can schedule timely repairs and ensure the yacht is ready for the next charter. Not reporting an accident only complicates the situation, as the diver will identify any issues during the inspection on Friday night. At that point, it becomes much more challenging for us to arrange repairs in time, which could result in significantly higher charges to you than if the issue were reported honestly upfront.

We understand that accidents happen—it's part of being human. But failing to inform us only makes the situation worse and is entirely avoidable. Let’s work together to ensure a smooth and fair process for everyone involved.

Taxi Arrangements to the Airport

Our team is happy to assist with organizing taxi transfers to the airport. To ensure a smooth and stress-free departure, we kindly ask that you inform us of your taxi requirements either on the check-in day or a few days prior to your check-out date via WhatsApp message or call.

Please note that arranging taxis last minute, especially during the high season, can be very challenging due to limited availability on the island, where demand often exceeds supply. Providing advance notice helps us secure your transfer and avoid any delays or inconveniences.

Can Bareboat Yachts Be Chartered with a Skipper or Crew?

Yes, all our yachts available for bareboat charters can also be chartered with a professional skipper or crew. We collaborate with a carefully selected group of experienced and professional freelance skippers and hostesses who would be delighted to join your charter.

The skipper remuneration fee is €1,330 + 24% VAT per week, and the hostess remuneration fee is €1,190 + 24% VAT per week.

What is a Skippered Charter?

A skippered charter means you’ll have a professional skipper onboard to captain the yacht and handle all navigation and safety responsibilities. With just the skipper as part of the crew, you’ll still be responsible for tasks like provisioning, cooking, and general upkeep during your journey.

Our skippers are permanent professionals who work with us throughout the season. They have a high level of qualifications, know the yacht inside and out, and are intimately familiar with the sailing area. With their expertise, you can relax and enjoy your adventure, knowing the technical side of sailing is in expert hands.

What Are the Advantages of a Skippered Charter?

A skippered charter offers many benefits, making it a great option for a relaxed and enjoyable sailing experience:

Access to Larger Yachts: With a skipper onboard, you can charter our larger yachts (46ft and above), which are not available for bareboat charters, giving you more space and luxury.
Expert Navigation and Safety: Your skipper takes care of all aspects of navigating and operating the yacht, ensuring a safe and worry-free journey.
Local Knowledge: Skippers know the area intimately and can guide you to the best routes, secluded bays, and hidden gems that only locals are aware of.

How Much is the Skipper Remuneration?

The skipper fee is €1,330 plus 24% VAT per week. This fee must be paid via bank transfer, along with your final charter payment, before the start of your trip.

Do I Have to Tip the Skipper?

Tipping is entirely at your discretion and not mandatory. In Europe, there isn’t a fixed rule or percentage based on the total charter price. However, it’s quite customary to tip the skipper an amount between €300 and €1,000 for the week, depending on the level of service and your overall satisfaction.

Your tip is a way to show appreciation for the skipper’s expertise and efforts in making your sailing experience enjoyable and stress-free.

Who Will Be My Skipper?

That said, participation in some on-deck activities is often encouraged and appreciated, especially during certain maneuvers. For example, you might assist with securing landlines during stern-to docking or calling out distances when visibility is limited. The skipper will brief you on these tasks and only ask for your help if you feel comfortable.

If you prefer not to participate, don’t worry—our skippers are adaptable and will find alternative solutions or docking spots to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone onboard.

Can I Drive the Dinghy on a Skippered Charter?

The dinghy is registered to the mothership, which means the skipper holds full liability for its use. For this reason, guests are not permitted to drive the dinghy themselves. However, your skipper will be more than happy to take you wherever you’d like to go in the dinghy, ensuring your needs are met while maintaining safety and compliance.

How Does the Usage of Watertoys Work (Towable Tubes, Waterski, Wakeboard)?

The skipper will guide you on the proper and safe use of watertoys during your charter. Please note that the use of motorized watersports is restricted in certain areas, such as designated swimming zones, where such activities are prohibited.

The skipper’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of all guests and the yacht. If the skipper determines that watersports are unsafe, he has the authority to restrict their usage. For example, if a guest is intoxicated, appears physically unfit, or if the conditions pose a risk of injury, the skipper may limit access to watersports equipment. In these cases, lighter equipment such as Stand-Up Paddleboards may still be available for use.

Furthermore, watersports activities are physically demanding for the skipper, who is fully exposed to the sun while assisting. Therefore, watersports are limited to a maximum of 1 hour per day to ensure the skipper’s well-being.

Please note that the use of watersports equipment is solely at your own risk. The skipper, crew, charter fleet operator, agency, or yacht owner are not liable for any injuries or damages resulting from the use of this equipment. Your safety is our priority, and we ask for your cooperation to ensure a responsible and enjoyable experience.

Is the Security Deposit Waiver Fee Applicable for Skippered Charters?

Yes, the Security Deposit Waiver Fee is mandatory for all charters, including skippered charters. The fee is €500 per charter and must be paid via bank transfer along with your final payment before the charter begins.

While the Security Deposit Waiver does not eliminate the refundable security deposit, it significantly reduces it from €5,000 to €1,500. This fee is used to purchase an insurance policy that covers part of the deductible, limiting your financial liability to a much smaller amount.

This policy ensures added security and peace of mind, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy your sailing experience without unnecessary worry.

Why Is There Also a Refundable Security Deposit?

The refundable security deposit exists to cover damages caused by you or your guests that exceed the coverage provided by the €500 Security Deposit Waiver Fee. Examples of such damages include blocked toilets, cigarette burns on upholstery, broken hatches, or similar issues.

It’s important to note that the refundable security deposit will not be used to cover damages caused by the skipper. The skipper is a professional and responsible for their own actions, so any damages they might cause are not your liability.

Provisioning for the Skipper

Your skipper will eat onboard from the provisions you provide, and it is your responsibility to ensure adequate provisions are available for him. While the skipper does not need to eat with you, he will always respect your privacy. At dinner time, he may stay onboard and dine alone or choose to eat at a local tavern. If he eats out, a budget of up to €15 per day(per person) must be covered by you.

Some guests choose to invite the skipper to join them for dinner occasionally. This is entirely up to you and the dynamic you feel with the skipper—it’s not mandatory but can be a nice gesture if you’re comfortable with it.
